When Jason walked into the Bozeman Police Department, he didn’t know what to expect.

Dan Carter, the chief of police, met him at the front counter. “Special Agents Randall and Barrett are here, along with Tank and Sam from Fletcher Security. Gideon Armstrong from the County Sheriff’s Office has just left.”

When Dan opened the meeting room door, whatever was being said came to an abrupt end. He introduced Jason to the people in the room.

Jason nodded to each of them, but it was Claire he was worried about. She stood beside the window, her face an expressionless mask.

“Claire? Are you all right?”

Tears filled her eyes. “Mom’s gone. We looked everywhere, but she’s disappeared.”

Jason wrapped his arm around her shoulders. “Everyone will be doing their best to find her.”

Claire turned into his chest and held on tight.

He pulled her close, wanting her to know that she wasn’t alone. While he held her in his arms, he looked over her shoulder at Dan. “Do you know for sure that Caldwell is involved in Denise’s disappearance?”

Claire moved away from him and wiped her face. “He took a photo of mom.”

Dan handed him a piece of paper. “This was emailed to us twenty minutes ago.”

Denise Williams was bound and gagged, her eyes pleading with whoever was behind the camera.

“On the back of the photo is the message he sent.”

Jason turned over the paper.

You’re making this too easy, Detective Smith.

A cold sweat broke out on Jason’s forehead. “Do you think Denise is still on the ranch?”

Tank shook his head. “The FBI and the police have confirmed that she isn’t in any of the buildings. They’re doing an initial check of the lake and any waterways. Tomorrow morning, they’ll do a more thorough inspection.”

Dan handed Jason another photo. “The only vehicle to leave the ranch around the time of Denise’s disappearance was this van. It belongs to the catering company.”

Claire frowned. “Annie is careful about who she hires. She does a background check on everyone.”

“We’ve already spoken to her,” Special Agent Randall said. “One of her employees has gone missing. He was last seen about thirty minutes before you spoke to your mother. Annie has returned to her office to email me a copy of his employee file.”

Jason frowned. “You think it might be Caldwell?”

“It can’t be him,” Dan said. “Annie told the FBI that the man they’re looking for has been working with her for four months. His name is Stephen Simpson. Caldwell wasn’t released from prison until a few weeks ago.”

Jason knew that forward planning was Caldwell’s specialty. “If it wasn’t Caldwell, it will be someone he knows.”

Dan pointed to a map of southern Montana. “We’ve calculated the maximum distance he could have traveled after the kidnapping. Roadblocks are in place on all roads in and out of Bozeman. Unless he’s traveling across other properties, he’s going nowhere.”

Special Agent Randall walked across to the map. “Given the timing, the photo of Denise would have been taken somewhere around here or here.” Randall circled two areas on the map.
